Secretary Haaland joined by Fish and Wildlife Service
Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland recently joined leaders from the Nez Perce Tribe, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to commemorate the transfer of the Dworshak National Fish Hatchery from the administration to the Nez Perce Tribe. The group toured the facilities before officiating the transfer of production, a process that has been in the works for almost 20 years. The hatchery facilitates the production of over 5 million fish that are added to the Snake and Columbia rivers every year.
“There is much to be gained when we respect and integrate Indigenous knowledge into our conservation initiatives,” said Secretary Haaland. “Today’s event commemorates Native people’s resilience, conservation efforts guided by Indigenous knowledge, and the Biden-Harris administration’s commitment to honor our trust responsibility and treaty obligations to Tribes.”
